Most of yall know me as a Philly Jawn, but before the City pf Brotherly Love, I was all about that DC and Prince Georges County, MD life!
When I first came to Philly for grad school, I couldn't stand it and had EVERY intention to return to PG and buy a condo. But a girl fell in love with a boy, got engaged and the rest is history. I digress! The twist is, though, that I actually met my North Philly-born-and-raised husband at DC Live!In the late 90s and early 2000s, the DC club scene was THRIVING! And I was partaking almost every weekend, broke and all! LOL! Iconic megaclubs like DC Live, and Dream were the hottest spots in town, playing R&S, Hip Hop and of course that Go-Go beat! But what made these spots legendary was their size—DC Live and Dream had huge dance floors and multiple levels that held THOUSANDS of people!

Now, I know, I know, my NYC peeps gonna say yall had that too. And you did. Loved me some Bentleys and The Shadow! But DC was different. It had that sense of community; it was all about the local Black scene, drawing in college students, young partiers, local celebs, and athletes. The music, the vibes, everything was DC. Chocolate City in its pre-gentrification era.
But hands-down my favorite spot was Republic Gardens. Just $10 to get in, and it was practically down the block from my house. Small, cozy and intimate, but it still with multiple levels. You could play pool, dance all night (while Biz Markie DJ’d), or hold a chill convo on the patio. Ah good times!
Anywho, our newest hoodie is an ode to my old stomping grounds and my favorite three DC nightclubs. We have a huge DC/MD/VA customer base, so I bet many of you share these same memories! Grab this hoodie, get cozy and reminisce on the good ole days!
PS...Shoutout and honorable mentions to 2k9, H2O, State of the Union, Plstinum, The Bank, and Zanzibar. Oh, and BET Soundstage and Jaspers—DC folks will turn a nice restaurant and brunch spot into a lounge or club in a heartbeat! I heard that Wegmans in PG has a damn happy hour!
